Learning To Drive With AB Driving School
Are you thinking of learning to drive? We can help!
For more information about driving, from how to acquire a licence to information about owning your own car, visit the Govenment's Driving Information website.
Theory Test
Before taking your Practical Driving Test you will be required to pass the Theory & Hazard Perception Test.
Before beginning driving lessons you must be at least 17 years old, hold a Provisional Driving Licence for the category of vehicle you wish to drive and be able to read a vehicle number plate from the required distance. Application forms for Provisional Licences can be obtained from Post Offices -- more information can be found here.
Why struggle alone with the theory aspect of learning to drive?
All AB Driving School driving instructors are able to help you study for the Theory and Hazard Perception parts of the Theory Test. We normally include this training within your driving lesson if requested at NO EXTRA COST. This training can involve the theory of learning to drive in the form of mock tests to take home with you to be returned and marked on your next lesson or bringing the theory to life on the move during your practical driving lesson.
Our instructors will not try to sell you any training materials for the theory test but will advise you on which are the best for your needs if you require them to do so.
You cannot apply for a practical driving test until you have passed both parts of the Theory Test -- simply ask your instructor about Theory Tuition and he will be happy to help.
Please see our prices for our full price list and discounts.
For more information about the Theory Test visit the Govenment's Driving Information Theory Test webpage.
Practical Test
Before taking your Practical Driving Test you will be required to pass the Theory & Hazard Perception Test.
During the course of your lessons your Instructor will assess and advise you of your progress and when both of you feel you are ready you or your Instructor can apply for your Practical Test.
The Practical Test consists of a 40 minute drive with a Driving Examiner in the area of your chosen test centre. You will be assessed throughout this time on your driving ability and also be required to carry out small checks on the vehicle, this is known as "Show Me; Tell Me" -- eg: "How would you check your oil?", "How would you check your brake lights?" etc..
The Examiner will assess your driving and record marks for any faults that you make. To be successful and pass the test you must ensure that you do not acquire more than 15 minor marks or any serious/dangerous marks. Your Instructor will explain the "Marking System" to you before your test.
There is no need to pass your Theory Test before practical lessons can begin as your Instructor can structure his tuition to include theory and practical elements at the same time within your lessons.
